USB/USBC monitor hubs

Oh sigh. So Apple in all it’s wisdom, all hail our new overlords ships its laptops with less ports than I personally need.

This is what I needed:

  • Two large monitors - it’s bewildering the way they keep changing the connectors

  • An external web cam - although I guess if I had a screen with one built in that problem would be a little simpler

  • Wired internet since the reception is poor and the latency on all the wireless routers I had was too high

I think I might have found my solution, I found them using https://interfaceware.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/EC/pages/2714698385 (that is a trend)

https://www.twelvesouth.com/products/staygo-usb-c-hub - I am going to buy it and see if it works for me. This was a moderate success for me. It wasn’t powerful enough to handle my 8k monitor - see https://interfaceware.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/EC/pages/2721284483

Not as house and garden as their pictures but an incremental success for me

This enabled me to:

  • I now only use 3 of my USBC ports - The hub connection and two external monitors

  • The power goes through the hub - 85W which is good power - this wasn’t working with my older cheaper hub

  • I have a wired ethernet connection because of problems with wifi on my 3rd floor (have to find the links on that)

  • 3 USB hubs for my keyboard, external camera and mouse

I was reasonably happy with it. It does get hot which might be a worry - I think my search for a perfect USB hub is not done yet. This is better than what I had.

https://www.twelvesouth.com/ is interesting - they have a lot of nice Mac accessories….well actually so far the products have been pretty average - see https://interfaceware.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/EC/pages/2717745411.

This company also looked interesting but I have not yet bought or used any of their products.
