IE6 held progress of the web back for a long time. Monopolies generally aren’t great for progress.

Eventually market forces do tend to route around monopolies though.

IE6 was a significant issue for web developers wanting to make more modern powerful web applications because it didn’t support the newer standards in browsers.

As a result many technologies arose to compensate - like jQuery and CSS pre-processors.
