Our brains are complex systems which try to reconcile things. This is example the case of:

Equilibrium

Extreme mental illness happens when people get exposed to extremely unsolvable problems for which there is no healthy solution.

For instance a child who is sexually abused by a parent has a huge problem to reconcile because their parent is supposed to be someone who protects them but actually becomes a threat.

A husband married to a closet lesbian who does not want to touch him over a decade can become unhappy and end up emotionally unregulated and be diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder and be prescribed Tranquilizers. See Fundamental Attribution Error.

This is difficult for the conscious mind to respond to and can result in all sorts of unusual configurations like:

Schizophrenia and Split Personality.
