Types of Integration Workflows

Generally, there are three types of integration structures:

This integration type involves a direct connection between two specific healthcare systems or applications. Data is shared or exchanged between these two systems only.

For example, an EHR system is directly connected to a laboratory system.

This integration type involves one system being integrated with multiple other systems. The central system communicates with a variety of systems or applications, sending data to each of them.

For example, an EHR system at a large hospital is integrated with various lab systems, pharmacies, and insurance providers.

This integration type involves multiple systems or sources feeding data into one central system. The focus is on gathering data from various systems into a single application or platform.

For example a healthcare facility has multiple specific EHR systems (radiology, laboratory, cardiology) that all feed data into a central hospital EHR system.
