Like many folks of my genetic heritage many of us are blessed with an wealth of ‘gifts’ from Uncle Ed here - showing his best smile. For all the gifts Ed gave me I would like to think he gave me kindness as well as an over abundance of body hair.

Down under we even have a NZ comedian called Fred Dagg whose stage name is a bit of a sly joke about this problem. Real sheep (unlike Shawn the sheep) and many real men have a hard time keeping themselves clean.

And to clarify using computer terminology we are talking more of a back end rather than front end user interface issue.

I take great care over my personal hygiene. In practice that means a lot more showers than necessary and I take longer than I would like to in the bathroom.

Do you find the same?

Lots of ordinary men like myself with this problem. In fact every guy friend I know has spoken to about is interested but a little nervous about it.

So I thought all this needs is some fun marketing and I think it could be a significant business that would benefit society helping many hairy lovable older men live longer and healthier.

I had a mortifying experience going to a mainly women’s beauty salon. They quietly told me in private that they would not do this. I felt quite traumatized by the experience. It made me feel like I was a deviant to even ask about this and they didn’t help me find anyone who could help me.

I felt shamed. Although later I went back and got my hair (on my head) cut for years there. They were willing to help me with some of my hair problems.

Other groups in society have clinics which service them. I know a lovely business called bluebird laser hair removal. They do a beautiful job of helping people who self identify as queer community with hair problems. But to keep their community safe at this stage they feel it is not part of their business to help people like me even though I got a little confused by their literal messaging.

Still a great place - I recommend it heartily if you self identify as a member of this community - I would recommend it for my family if they self identified this way.

Let me tell you a dirty little secret. Well not so secret.

Laser hair removal is really expensive! You only get about 10% hair removal with each session - this market is ripe for disruption.

This industry is in need of some innovation.

I get that because I am in the innovation business - I am a physicist who went into tech. Did you know all the of the NHL and NBA’s covid test results went through my companies software?

Speaking completely high level - basically laser hair removal works better with dark hair. The energy from the laser is better absorbed which heats up the hair folicule and burns out the root.

Laser hair removal gets progressively more difficult - reminds me of microbes which are resistant to anti-biotics. The hairs which get left are harder - smaller, blonder etc.

So from first principles hair dye could help - but there are some caveats to consider to avoid creating unintentional tatoos.

We are going to figure this out.

Dudes be busy man - we got businesses to run, children to be fathering, stuff to be doing. I hear you brother!

It blows me away at most laser hair removal places don’t have showers. And some expect customers to shave themselves down there before treatment!

Get real man - what you expect us to do man - get the missus to shave us down there?

Fred Dagg is a fictional character from New Zealand created and acted on stage, film and television by satirist John Clarke. Clarke appeared on New Zealand TV screens as Dagg during the mid to late 1970s, "taking the piss" out of the post-pioneering Kiwi "blokes" and "blokesses". The sense of the name "Dagg" is associated with the slang term dag. The Fred Dagg character is a stereotypical farmer and New Zealand bloke: clad in a black singlet and gumboots, hailing from the isolated rural town of Taihape, and attended by numerous associates (or sons) all named "Trev". One memorable expression was uttered whenever there was a knock at the door: "That'll be the door." When Clarke first unveiled the character of Fred Dagg in recordings and on New Zealand TV in 1975, he became a national star. He also recorded a series of records and cassettes as Dagg,^[1] as well as publishing several books.
