Proportional versus fixed width fonts

Proportional versus fixed width fonts

Why do we need both?

Proportional fonts are easier to read since an I should take up less space than an M, otherwise it looks strange since our eye interprets the extra white space around an I as being a space breaking up works.

Computer editors typically use fixed width fonts since it is easier to arrange things in columns etc.
